Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that it might be difficult to find a good omega-3 supplement that is high in quality and purity as well as being sustainably sourced. That’s why we try to be as transparent and open as possible. Please contact us for any questions you might have.

  • Omega-3s are a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). There are three major types of omega-3s: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

ALA comes from plants and is a true “essential” omega-3 because we need to get this fat from the diet – our bodies can’t make it on their own. It’s found in seeds (flax, chia), nuts (walnuts) and oils (soybean, canola), to name a few. ALA can be converted to EPA and DHA in the body, but the process is inefficient.

EPA and DHA are omega-3s that come primarily from marine (sea) sources. EPA and DHA are the omega-3s that have been shown to be the most protective of the heart. Scientific evidence also supports the role of EPA and DHA for prenatal, brain, and eye health.

  • If you eat fatty fish 2 to 3 times a week, there normally is no need to take omega-3 supplements, as you would get the recommended 250 mg of EPA and DHA from your diet.

For everyone else, a supplement is beneficial.

If you need to maintain or regulate your blood pressure or triglyceride levels, a higher dosage of 2-3 grams per day is recommended. A supplement can help you reach that target.

Some people (for example, students, seniors) also find it beneficial to increase their intake of DHA for their cognitive health and focus. Many studies suggest a higher intake of omega-3s for various conditions and life stages.

Remember that the omega-3s EPA and DHA are considered “essential” – meaning that they need to come from food or supplements. Every cell membrane in your body incorporates omega-3s.

  • Cod liver oil typically contains 26-30% omega-3s, while Fjorda offers a minimum of 75% omega-3s. This means more of what you need and less of what you do not want.

Additionally, cod liver oil is made from the liver of the cod, whereas Fjorda is made from the whole body of fatty fish such as anchovies, sardines, and mackerel.

  • Fjorda omega-3s are predominantly made from anchovies, but can also be created from a mix of sardines and mackerel. All fisheries are certified by Friend of the Sea and Marine Trust.

  • Yes, omega-3s are very good for most pets. However, we would not recommend giving the Fjorda Immunity formulation to your pet as it contains Vitamin D. For more guidance on pets and omega-3s, please consult with your veterinarian.

  • When stored correctly, the max totox for Fjorda within the two-year shelf life is 15.

  • Yes, people with allergies to fish or citrus should not take Fjorda omega-3s.

  • The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers the long-term use of up to 5 g of EPA+DHA per day to be safe for adults. If someone happened to eat a whole container of Fjorda omega-3 capsules, they might experience digestive issues. Please contact your doctor if this happens.

  • Congratulations! During pregnancy, omega-3s play a crucial role in fetal development, especially brain and eye development. To give your baby the best start in life, 200 mg DHA daily is recommended. But do not forget yourself! Mothers also need EPA and DHA during pregnancy and when they are lactating. In total, we recommend a daily intake of 550 mg of omega-3s, with a majority of that being DHA. Two softgels of Fjorda Brain should cover your needs.

  • The best time to take omega-3 supplements varies from person to person. Some prefer them with meals to enhance absorption, while others find it easier on an empty stomach. Find the rhythm that suits your daily routine.

  • Yes, all Fjorda omega-3 formulations are gluten free.

  • Yes, all Fjorda omega-3 formulations are non-GMO.

  • We have created Fjorda Heart with more EPA than DHA for general heart health. Our Fjorda Brain formulation is the opposite with more DHA than EPA, intended for general brain health.

This means that you get both EPA and DHA in each capsule. We would recommend Fjorda Brain for students, adolesents , children, and seniors for their cognitive health. Taking two capsules of Fjorda Brain still gives you 300 mg EPA, which is good for your heart.

If you take two capsules of Fjorda Heart you will get 550 mg of EPA and 250 mg of DHA.

Instead of buying two bottles, you can simply increase the daily dosage.

  • Yes, you can. If chewing the capsules, we recommend keeping your mouth closed to prevent spilling any oil on your clothes. If not promptly and thoroughly cleaned, the oil may leave a stain and odor on your garments.

  • Due to potential choking hazards, omega-3 softgels are not recommended for children younger than 3 years old. However, omega-3s are very good for the development of the eyes and brains of toddlers, so you should make sure they eat fish or take liquid omega-3 or chewable omega-3 supplements. Unfortunately, we do not have this in our range yet.

  • The fish oil used in all Fjorda omega-3 formulations is in TG form. More precisely rectified triglyceride forms, such as the TG form, are better absorbed by your body.

  • Generally, there are no complications from taking fish oil with other medications. However, it is advisable to consult with your doctor or healthcare professional before taking omega-3 supplements in combination with anticoagulants or prescription drugs.

  • The quality of Fjorda omega-3 products is undeniably remarkable. Not only do they give you a minimum of 75% omega-3s, but their levels of environmental toxins, pollution, and oxidation are at a minimum.

The softgel minicapsules are small and easy to swallow – and we promise no fishy burps!

The fish oil is in a re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) form, which means that bioavailability is very high (that is, the omega-3 oils are more easily absorbed).

Fjorda is made in Norway and founded by two women who have put their hearts into creating something that would make their children proud.
